The Battle of Monte Cassino

The New Zealanders

New Zealand forces at Monte Cassino consisted of the II New Zealand Corps (Lt Gen Sir Bernard Freyberg).  The Corps itself was a multinational commonwealth organization and included a New Zealand, a British and an Indian division.  The New Zealand division was the 2nd Infantry (Brig Gen Howard Kippenberger and in its ranks it included a Maori infantry battalion.  The New Zealanders
Assaulted Cassino, replacing the bloodied Americans during the 1st and 2nd Battles of Monte Cassino.  They put up a good fight against the well entrenched elite paratroops they faced but the progress they made in the town was very small.
