The Battle of Monte Cassino

The Canadians

At Monte Cassino the Canadians were represented by the 1st Canadian Corps which was subordinated to the British 8th Army.  During the penetration of the Gustav Line the Canadians did not take part in the fighting as they remained in the Army's reserve.  However, once the line was breached, the Canadians passed through the lines and attacked the Hitler Line which blocked the way further up the Liri Valley.  They penetrated the German positions together with the Poles and opened the road to Rome.
